Lesson 6 · From evidence to the training ground
Smith’s design: a portable goal 18 yards past halfway, 7v7 inside the width of the penalty area. Both teams attack and defend a Zone 14+ — every possession rehearses the corridor, the runner, and the pass behind.
The local rules do the coaching: attackers may only enter the box after the ball is played in — or by carrying it in. Offside applies only in the box. Defenders may win the ball only in Zone 14+ or their own box. Every rule points the game at category (a) goals.
Open the practice to full width and crossing arrives as an option — category (b) enters the game on your terms. Add a counter-attack rule for the defending team and you’re rehearsing Lesson 5’s transitions too.
Zones tell you where the pass is worth most. Triangles tell you whether it can be played. Transitions tell you when. And the practice is where the three become habits. Now take the free board and design your own.
